I think every individual is capable of growing and meeting the challenges of life, but sometimes we may need a helping hand. To seek out and ask for help is not shameful nor should it be viewed as a weakness. In fact it requires a lot of courage to be able to acknowledge you need help and then to reach out and place yourself in a vulnerable position when getting that help. This first step of seeking help should be acknowledged and commended as it is not easy.

My hope is to create a safe environment where you feel comfortable working together towards you goals. I believe one of the most important factors in therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe environment where you can be vulnerable and authentic without fear of judgement. It is important for me to work with clients collaboratively and to know that we are working towards a common goal of equipping you with the tools you need for your mental health. I want you to understand that I am not the expert, you are, and I am willing to learn from you so that I can address your individual situation.


Q & A with Anjali

What made you decide to choose your current profession?

I have personally and professionally seen the difficulties in accessing support when growing up in a community that heavily stigmatizes mental health and finding someone who understands the indvidual and nuanced view one can hold of their own experiences. Working within the social services sector I observed the strong need for support in underrepresented communities and wanted to join this profession to encourage help seeking in people of diverse backgrounds.

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

I think the media we consume has heavily influenced the way mental health is perceived and often those portrayals are sensationalized to be entertaining and quite dramatic. While people may share the experiences depicted in these media forms, there is a wide variety of experiences of mental health that are not shared and spoken about and that means there are often signs that are dismissed as not being mental health related.

What do you want your clients to know about you and what it will be like working with you?

I want my clients to know that I am not the expert nor will I behave in a way that makes me come across as one. I believe, as a professional, it is important that I am open about having a certain level of humility and being willing to continuously learn with each new client. I understand the uniqueness of each individual and do my best to not box them into stereotypes of their identities or situations, and want them to know that I am dedicated to addressing those individual aspects of their situations.
