What is depression?

Everyone gets ‘sad’ once in a while. Right? We often shrug off our ‘blues’ and end up suffering in silence… ashamed or afraid to ask for help. Contrary to misconceptions, depression is not a character flaw.

Depression is not a temporary change in mood or a sign of weakness. It is a real medical condition.

In fact, depression is a widespread medical condition. An estimated 1 in 4 Canadians experience symptoms of depression serious enough to need treatment at some time in his or her life. Unfortunately, many people, unaware of how common this illness is, still do not seek treatment because they are afraid of what others will think.

How we can help

Depression is among the most common mental disorders - and the most treatable.

Feeling depressed? Let’s talk about it!

We recognize that depression can be very debilitating. That’s why we offer free 30 minute consultations to help you determine if virtual depression counselling services at everwell will be right for you. During your free consultation, we take the time and care to understand your unique challenges and goals and what you are looking for from therapy. Based on your specific requirements, we’ll be able to match you with the therapist that best suits your unique needs, preferences and schedule.

Depression can take many forms and varies in severity. Some people seek therapy when symptoms of depression are mild – maybe just a sense that they aren’t able to be fully present for the ups and downs of their lives. Others come to therapy feeling very low and unable to fully function day-to-day. If you have been to a doctor about your depression you may or may not have been prescribed anti-depressant medication. Your doctor may have also suggested counselling or psychotherapy. Regardless of your path to coming to counselling, you do not require a diagnosis of depression to seek depression counselling. In fact, for many of our therapists, the label of ‘depression’ isn’t really very important.

We will work with you to help determine a course for improvement by getting to know what you are experiencing emotionally and how it is impacting all aspects of your life. Once we know how your thoughts are connected to your feelings, we can help you to work with your thoughts instead of having them work against you.

Our therapists utilize a variety of counselling and psychotherapy approaches that help to combat and cope with depression and will tailor their work with you based on your individual preferences and needs. We specifically use Cognitive Behavioural Strategies, Mindfulness, and Narrative Therapy to name just a few.
