Anxiety Counselling
If anxiety is getting in the way of the life you want for yourself - know that you are not alone.
Whether you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder or not, we recognize and honour that at times anxiety can take over. In fact, over half of Canadians (53%) consider anxiety and depression to be 'epidemic' in Canada, with that perception spiking amongst younger people, according to a survey commissioned by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
We experience anxiety when we perceive or think we are in danger.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is normal. We all experience anxiety at times. It is a bodily system that helps us deal with danger or to perform at our best. Our body’s “fight-flight-freeze” response gets involved when we are experiencing anxiety because it prepares our body to defend itself.
Anxiety causes physical reactions which take place when the body’s “fight-flight-freeze” response has been activated.
How anxiety works
Anxiety affects not only your body, it also affects your thoughts and behaviours. As a result, there are three parts to anxiety: physical symptoms (how our body responds), thoughts (what we say to ourselves), and behaviours (what we do, or our actions). Learning to recognize these signs of anxiety can help you to be less afraid of it.
Anxiety happens when you think you have to figure out everything all at once. Breathe. You’re strong. You got this. Take it day by day.

Hot and cold flashes
When does anxiety become a problem?
Anxiety is a problem when your body reacts as if there is a danger where there is no real danger (or perhaps only a very minor sense of danger). Anxiety is helpful and adaptive when it works right, but if there is no significant danger, it is not only scary, it is very exhausting.
