EMDR Therapy
Effective trauma treatment from the comfort of home.
Many people seek therapy because difficult memories, past experiences, or emotional triggers continue to affect their daily lives. Even when we know logically that something happened in the past, our emotions and body can still respond as if it is happening now. This can show up as anxiety, intrusive memories, or feeling stuck in patterns that are difficult to change.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain process distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming.
Everwell is pleased to offer virtual EMDR therapy—allowing you to access effective trauma therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Your experiences matter here.
If past memories or triggers feel difficult to navigate, it may be time to talk about it. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. When you’re ready, we can help.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals process and recover from distressing or traumatic experiences.
EMDR therapy is commonly used to support:
Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety and panic attacks
Intrusive memories
Phobias and fears
Grief and loss
Relationship trauma or betrayal
Negative beliefs about oneself
When someone experiences a stressful or overwhelming event, the brain may not fully process it. Instead, the memory can become “stuck,” along with the emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs connected to that experience.
This is why reminders of the past can trigger strong emotional reactions long after the event has ended.
EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess these memories so they can be stored in a healthier, less distressing way.
How EMDR Therapy Works
The brain naturally processes experiences and stores them as memories—much of this happens during REM sleep, when the eyes move back and forth while the brain organizes emotional experiences.
When an experience is overwhelming, this natural processing system can become disrupted. As a result, the memory may remain stored with the original distress attached to it.
EMDR therapy helps restart this natural process.
During sessions, your therapist will guide you to briefly focus on a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—a gentle, rhythmic back-and-forth activity that activates both sides of the brain.
Over time, this process helps:
Reduce the emotional intensity of the memory
Make the memory feel less vivid or intrusive
Support new, more adaptive beliefs
What Is Virtual EMDR Therapy?
Virtual EMDR therapy allows you to receive EMDR treatment through secure online video sessions.
Instead of attending in person, you’ll connect with your therapist from home or another private space. Your therapist will use digital tools to guide the EMDR process and provide bilateral stimulation.
Virtual EMDR offers the same structured approach as in-person therapy, with added flexibility and accessibility.
Is Virtual EMDR Effective?
Research and clinical experience suggest that virtual EMDR can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many individuals.
Online EMDR therapy offers several benefits:
Access to specialized trauma therapists, regardless of location
The comfort of participating from your own space
Reduced travel time and scheduling barriers
Increased privacy and convenience
For some people, being in a familiar environment can actually enhance feelings of safety—supporting deeper therapeutic work.
How Bilateral Stimulation Works in Virtual EMDR
A key component of EMDR therapy is bilateral stimulation, which activates both sides of the brain through rhythmic left-right patterns.
In virtual sessions, therapists use a variety of tools to guide this process:
Visual Bilateral Stimulation
A small light or dot moves across your screen from left to right. You follow it with your eyes while focusing on the memory.
Auditory Bilateral Stimulation
Using headphones, you’ll hear gentle tones alternating between your left and right ear.
Tactile Bilateral Stimulation
Your therapist may guide you through alternating tapping on your hands, shoulders, or knees.
Each method supports the brain’s natural ability to process and integrate difficult experiences.
