Finding a safe space to share your story is essential to one's healing, recovery and transformation. Through nonjudgmental curiosity, humor, insight, and empathy, I create a safe space in which clients can begin to rewrite the major narratives of their lives.

As a client centred therapist, I will work with you to identify strengths that can be applied in unique ways to help alleviate past and/or current struggles and put you back on the path to the best version of you.

I am a registered therapist with over 16 years of clinical experience working with couples, families and individuals struggling with a broad range of issues. I have worked in various positions which include family counselling teams, counselling walk-in clinics, employee assistance programs and over 16 years working with offenders within the criminal justice system.


Q & A with Monica

What made you decide to choose your current profession?

“As a young person at the age of 15, I had embarked on my first journey toward healing through therapy. I found it difficult to connect with a therapist who was truly able to appreciate aspects of my cultural identity and as a result, I had my own awakening. Over the years, I realized that I had found my purpose and made the decision to pursue social work. I had a strong desire to provide support not only to all communities, however, to include marginalized communities. It was and remains very important for me to recognize and respect the full range of our differences. As a result, I remain committed to a practice that promotes equity, inclusion and diversity.”

 

What do you like most about what you do?

“The best part about my role is that I get to work with individuals, couples and families intimately who are putting the puzzle pieces of their lives back together and/or looking for ways to become active forces in their own lives. I have witnessed some true bravery, courage and dedication with those that have entrusted me with their stories. It has been absolutely amazing to watch people take charge of their own destiny, design or redesign a life of purpose and substance and live this life with intention.”

 

What does 'integrated health' mean to you?

“Collaboration and communication between various health professionals to provide complete mind, body and spirit treatment to improve overall well being. I view ‘integrated health’ as a holistic approach to best address the overall needs of a client.”

 

What does 'wellness' mean to you?

“I consider ‘wellness’ to be mental, spiritual and physical housekeeping - if we are proactive with this housekeeping, our spirits will shine and bring peace and happiness.”

 

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

“There are too many misconceptions to list! One of the biggest misconceptions about mental health is reaching out for help is a sign of weakness. Vulnerability is strength. Our culture perpetuates the narrative that it is weak to ask for help, and this misconception is something that can be a barrier for so many. It is not just an unhealthy belief; it’s completely false. Those struggling in their mental health need to reach out to trusted adults and professionals, so they can receive the help they deeply deserve!”

 

What do you want your clients to know about you and what it will be like working with you?

What do you value most in a client?

“Client being open to the journey and process while preparing to ‘lean’ into the discomforts along the way.”

“That the client felt a sense of safety and trust as well as respected, validated and honored.”

What’s the one piece of advice you would give others about life?

“Review your goals daily - our goals are road maps that show you what is truly possible for your life.”

What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?

“Every moment is a teacher - look for the lesson!”

“1) Weight training - I lift weights 5 times per week and this provides for a space to build on both my physical and emotional strength. 2) Spending time with family - I love spending time with my family! My family are my absolutely favourite people who accept me and embrace my authentic self! 3) Reading - I love to nurture my soul and mind.”
