Caitlin Jacobs
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Hello there! My name is Caitlin Jacobs, nice to meet you! I am currently living, working, and learning in Nogojiwanong (Peterborough) Ontario on Michi Saagiig territory.
I always describe myself as curious, empathetic, direct, and principled. I feel deeply connected to and motivated by my values, and have learned so much from the different folks I have worked with thus far in my career. I am especially skilled at helping clients feel seen and heard in their experiences without judgement, and supporting them in finding language to describe their situation.
Maybe being vulnerable feels particularly difficult, or you might want to make some shifts in how you show up in relationships. Maybe you just need some private space to vent and process what’s been on your mind. Maybe you’ve made a mistake, or you’re not acting in the ways you want to according to your values. I want to work alongside you and your experiences to try and create some relief, deepen your connection to yourself, and perhaps make sense of some pieces that haven’t been fitting comfortably for you. I’d like to help bring you back into connection, and show you the possibility that comes from being gentle with yourself.
Q & A with Caitlin
What made you decide to choose your role as a therapist?
“I have a knack for guiding people through identifying their needs, their values, and their goals. In addition to my therapeutic knowledge, I use my skills as a Mediator and Restorative Justice facilitator to provide caring coaching around communicating one’s needs, creating and maintaining boundaries, and finding ways forward after mistakes have been made or harm has been caused.”
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?
“I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that people are solely responsible for their own happiness. There are so many things within our environments, our histories, and our systems that need to be considered. Further, our relationships and our physical health can all create additional context for our mental health.”
What do you like most about what you do?
“I like that I can be involved in trust-building with the people I work with.”
What do you value most in a client?
“I really admire my client's feedback. Whether it's something about scheduling preference, what they choose to explore in a session, or if we can use new approaches to working towards their goals. It can be hard to be direct sometimes, and I strive to create lots of opportunity for feedback, and to model empathy and encouragement when clients speak up!”
What do you want a client to know about working with you?
“I'd like for clients to know how relaxed a therapy session can feel. I take my clients and their concerns seriously, and I try to connect with clients on their level. We can use humor, we don't have to use "therapy speak", and we can just go with the flow of conversation if that's what my client wants or needs.”
What would you like a client to say about working with you?
“I am approachable, non-judgemental, and collaborative. I've been told I'm easy to talk to and help people feel heard. Clients can expect respectful curiosity, a relaxed demeanour, and humour when appropriate!”
What is your biggest achievement to date?
“Being proud of the work that I do.”
