Maeve Howard

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Therapist Intern

Hi there, my name is Maeve (like “wave” with an M!), but you can also call me Mae. I have worked with non-profit organizations and in healthcare for many years, which has shown me how unique everyone’s lived experiences are. I’ve learned that healing is not linear; there will be both good days and bad days, and anything in between. What matters most is meeting people where they are in their journey and sitting with them through difficult times.

In my work, I make an intentional effort to leave assumptions at the door and let you lead, because you are the expert on your own lived experiences. I truly believe we all have the capacity for change, and that journey often begins with the courage to ask for help. When you work with me, I want therapy to feel as comfortable and natural as possible. I aim to create an environment where you can feel at ease being yourself, without pressure or judgment.

A little about me: I’m naturally curious, and I value learning just as much as I value listening. I want to get to know you not just as a client, but as a person, your story, your past, and where you want to go in the future. I know that we all come from different cultural backgrounds and experiences, and I hold a deep respect for that diversity. My goal is to remain open, adaptable, and willing to learn, so that I can tailor therapy to fit you as an individual rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Q & A with Maeve

What made you decide to choose your role as a therapist?

“I’ve had my own struggles with mental health, and still do at times. For a long while, I felt alone and unheard, and that experience pushed me to become someone others could turn to—someone who would truly listen and understand. At the heart of it, I want to be the kind of person my younger self needed.”

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

“That it is a sign of weakness. In reality, reaching out for help shows incredible strength and self-awareness.”

What do you like most about what you do?

“I get to talk to people from all walks of life, with so many individual lived experiences. I love seeing them make progress on their own healing journey, whatever that means for them.”

What do you value most in a client?

“I value the trust, openness, and vulnerability I receive from a client. I don’t expect it, but with time I hope we will build a solid foundation together.”

What would you like a client to know about working with you?

“I know what it is like to feel alone, unheard, and hopeless. It is important for me to meet you where you're at right now with a willingness to sit with you alongside your darkest thoughts and give them a space to exist without judgement or expectations.

My work comes from a place of warm, empathy, and a sense of humour. I stay away from toxic-positivity, but I do my best to try to see the light through the darkness.”

What does wellness mean to you?

“I believe that wellness is defined by nurturing one’s mind, body, and spirit. I believe that everything is connected and influences one’s quality of life.”

What is your biggest achievement to date?

“Achieving my childhood dream to go to Japan! Twice!”

What is your personal mantra or favourite quote?

Everything will work out. There is always a way.
