Hi, my name is Matthew/Rached, and you can use either, a nickname, or any pronouns for me. I have spent many years working in the non-profit sector, often within the intersections of mental health, sexual health, and disability. My experiences have taught me how unique individuals are.
I try to leave my assumptions at the door when it comes to your experiences, identities, communities, and cultures. I care about your stories. I think that we are shaped by the stories we hold about ourselves, and that we have the power to reshape our lives by reinterpreting and bringing new meaning to our experiences.
Using your own values, you can shape the story you make moving forward, improving your relationships with yourself, your loved ones, and your communities.
Q & A with Mattew/Rached
What do you like most about the work that you do?
I like being there to witness people learning to take up more space, seeing their emotions as valid but not in control of the situation, and getting to make choices that feel right for them.
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?
No therapist is the expert on you. You are the expert in the room and the therapy is a tool that we can use to help you on your own journey.
What do you want your clients to know about you and what it will be like working with you?
I want you to find joy, but I want you to learn more about yourself in the process. I want you to know that you deserve joy, love, and appreciation for being exactly who you are.
However, I avoid toxic-positivity. If you have negative feelings and experiences, it is okay for us to sit with them. I might call you in to see where you decide to take accountability and action in your life. Therapy can be uncomfortable in moments, but it can also lead you to greater comfort with yourself.
