Michelle Kivi

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Therapist Intern

My path to becoming a therapist has been a long one. I worked the ‘grind’ for many years in the hospitality industry, managing a great team and meeting many amazing people along the way. However, as my life became more stable, I became more dissatisfied with my work and found myself questioning, “What am I doing with my life?” I loved my job, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing - that I wanted to do more to help others and my community. As I explored these feelings in myself, I recognized that, in my pursuit of stability and ‘making it’, I had lost a part of me along the way. I felt like life was just going past me, that my life wasn’t really mine, but an idea of a life I was ‘supposed’ to lead.

I like to think that my journey into this career is where I have always meant to be. I have always been the strong one, the one that people rely on or turn to for help. I have always been that presence for others, but it took me a long time to see that in myself. I consider myself extremely lucky and privileged to be able to follow my path, to have the support I need to chase my dreams, and now to help others as they find their way.

I fully embrace a ‘fellow traveller’ stance in therapy, walking alongside clients as they journey through life. I like to ask questions and understand the “why” behind people’s thoughts, motivations and behaviours. I believe that the better we understand ourselves, our values and what really drives us, the better equipped we are to face the challenges life throws at us.

Q & A with Michelle

What made you decide to choose your current profession?

“When reflecting on this question I am surprised at how challenging it is to answer! Why counselling? I initially returned to school and began my journey with the goal of helping others and my community. But why have I chosen to ‘help’ then in this way? I see mental health as foundational to wellbeing; it sets the stage for who we are and how we interact with the world around us. It is part of everything we do. So, what better way to help others then to help them live their best lives?”

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

“That mental health is simply being ‘ill’ or ‘well’. Mental health exists on a continuum, that is always changing based on the world around us. Understanding and managing our mental health is much more than simply treating mental illness, but incorporating positive habits into our lives, and learning to recognize when our mental health needs our attention.”

What do you want your clients to know about you and what it will be like working with you?

“I would like clients to know I am a passionate and curious individual who is not afraid to question the norm, or how things ‘should be’. I think honesty and openness is key to the therapeutic process, and I recognize the immense trust they must place in me. My goal is always to provide a safe, collaborative space where we can explore wherever your journey has taken you- moving you towards your best future, whatever that looks like to you.”

What would you like a client to say about working with you?

“I hope they would say I am warm and compassionate. That I seem authentic and grounded. That I provide a safe and supportive space for them to explore their minds, but that I also challenge them to think deeply about their lives and values.”

What is your biggest achievement to date?

“That I have created a life that I am proud to say is mine, following my own path and discovering who I want to be.”

What is your personal mantra or favourite quote?

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.
