Miya Akiyama

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Masters of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy

As a therapist, I am most interested in people's stories about their lives. Inspired by the words of Thomas King, I believe that “The truth about stories is that’s all that we are.”

In therapy, we get to reflect on the stories we tell ourselves, consider whether we are happy with these narratives, and figure out ways to represent ourselves in the world around us authentically.

With a focus in Marriage and Family Therapy, I have been trained to approach problems with a systemic perspective. Whether looking at individual problems or relational issues, it is essential to consider how problems connect to our extended systems. Reflecting on personal histories, our communities, societal practices, and more, we can begin to discern the influences we keep and those we let go of. Recognizing that we are all unique and carry individual lived experiences, I see the client as having expert knowledge about their lives.

Working together, I aim to support you in reflecting on your personal stories with the goal of reauthoring these narratives in a preferred and chosen way.

Q & A with Miya

What made you decide to choose your current profession?

“Therapy integrates my passion for working collaboratively, problem-solving, and creativity. My work as a therapist is supported by my genuine interest in strengthening the social fabric of our communities. I am committed to developing strong and healthy alliances with my clients, am interested in hearing from their expertise, and believe that learning from others can benefit us all.”

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

“Mental health is not a static thing. It is a fluid, ever-changing part of our lives, is influenced by many things, and requires ongoing care and attention. Sometimes that can be a simple moment to oneself, while other times we must put in serious work. Seeking additional support and outside resources is a great way to alleviate the strains on our mental health and can help us manage and prepare for the challenges life throws our way.”

What is your biggest achievement to date - personal or professional?

“In the wake of my father's passing, I went on a backpacking trip that took me through India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Japan. This journey encouraged me to confront my grief, work through my challenges around this loss (and many more), and helped me centre myself and take charge of my life. These travels enabled me to overcome one of the biggest challenges of my life and have allowed me to move forward with intention and strength.”

What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?

“My father always encouraged for me to have "strength in the face of adversity"”

What would you like a client to say about working with you?

“I want clients to understand that I see therapy as a relationship and am happy to address any questions or concerns they may have about me. My path to becoming a therapist has been eclectic, and I bring backgrounds in documentary media, social equity, and advocacy. I am interested in the diversity surrounding people’s lives and believe our distinct contexts make each relationship unique.“

What do you like most about the work you do?

“With a background in documentary, I am interested in how stories are created, and I am drawn to helping others reauthor their narratives in a way that serves them best.”

What is your favourite place to find inspiration?

“Getting off the grid, disconnecting from technology, and tapping into nature is the best way for me to reset. Camping out and enjoying a night’s sleep in the woods helps quiet my mind and creates space for fresh perspectives. I also love to travel and think it's important to step outside our comfort zones and challenge the way we see the world.”

What's your favourite thing to do on your off time?

“I am an avid cyclist, I love spending time with my partner and my dog Milo, and I am always looking to try new foods and explore new cuisines”
