Frequently asked questions
Is online counselling as ‘good as’ in-person counselling?
Clients often ask us if online counselling is “as good as” in-person counselling. This is such a good question because people know that the relationship between client and therapist is such an incredibly important part of success in therapy. We are here to tell you that YES! Online counselling is “just as good as” and sometimes even better than in-person counselling. Our therapists at everwell are experts at making personal connection and creating a safe and warm environment for you to explore and grow. And the online environment can be an optimal place for this to happen.
Does online therapy work?
Even before COVID-19 required therapists to shift to online sessions, online therapy has grown in popularity over the past few years. Studies have shown that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. Research conducted in 2014 by Behaviour Research and Therapy found that anxiety disorders can be effectively treated via online sessions. Another study published in 2018 by the Journal of Anxiety Disorders determined that online cognitive behavioral therapy is "effective, acceptable, and practical health care." The study found that online cognitive behavioral therapy was just as effective as face-to-face treatment for major depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.
How do I know if online therapy is right for me?
Online counselling allows for you to access therapy on your own terms. You can situate yourself wherever you feel most comfortable, whenever works best for your schedule. We find that our online clients really benefit from being in their own space during their counselling appointment. People meet with us from their favourite chair, their outdoor balcony, their bedroom and very often their kitchen table. And once the appointment is finished, we hear that people are more able to sit and reflect in order to truly consider what was discussed because they are already in their comfortable place. The safety and warmth of being in your own chosen space while participating in therapy is a truly unique and beneficial aspect of work in this format.
What’s the difference between your online therapy and other therapy apps that are available?
There are many online therapy websites and apps available. However, before you consider one of these options, you should be aware that many of these services are based on the United States. As such, they do not meet the guidelines and laws set forth by the Ontario government and the professional credentials mandated to be a licensed therapist in Ontario. Without provincial accreditation, the online therapy you receive will not be covered by your extended healthcare plan.
How can I be sure that my information is kept private and secure?
Our online counselling platform meets all Canadian privacy and confidentiality regulations so you can rest assured that your communication with your therapist will be kept private and secure. Our therapists will ensure that they are located in a space that guarantees your privacy – free from distraction or any possibility of others overhearing. All you need to do is make sure you are in a quiet and private space so you can feel comfortable sharing with your therapist without concern of being interrupted or overheard. If you are unsure of how to create this kind of space, please reach out to us as we have lots of creative ideas about this topic!
