As a therapist, my goal is to walk with you through your journey of self-discovery. Sometimes it isn't very comfortable to explore who we are, but at other times, it is enlightening and insightful to experience your most authentic self. Coming to therapy is a big step, and from personal experience, I understand and appreciate that hesitancy. On the other hand, I also know what it is like to need support, and you might feel that way too.
In therapy, my goal is to share tools with you that you can use in our time together and on your own to maintain your mental health and take control of your life. Working together means having a voice, feeling heard, and being open while knowing I am listening rather than judging. Throughout my work, I have embraced an anti-oppressive lens and a unique worldview, and I imagine you have done the same. Therefore, I will ensure that our time together is tailored to meet your needs.
Q & A with Theia
What made you decide to choose your current profession?
“I have always been the person people feel comfortable confiding in, asking for advice or lending an ear to listen. This left me knowing I had always wanted to be part of a helping profession. But it was not until I had my own challenging experiences and did not seek therapy that I learned of its importance. So, my lived experiences have been a driving force for me in pursuing this profession. ”
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?
“It is commonly misconceived that mental health is not as important as physical health. However, both are important and just as you would care for your physical health often, the same attention should be given to your mental health. There is also a stigma associated with attending therapy because it is perceived as a sign of weakness. In reality, it's a sign of strength and personal kindness as you prioritize and care for yourself. ”
What do you like most about the work you do?
“I value knowing that I can be part of someone's journey to caring, loving, and appreciating themselves more. I believe everyone is resilient and can find the light in a dark situation, sometimes on their own and sometimes with some support. Their courage and strength to seek support are admirable, and the experience contributes to my personal and professional development as a therapist. ”
What do you want your clients to know about working with you?
“I see my clients for who they are as people rather than their struggles. As a cancer survivor, I am informed by my personal lived experiences. As a result, I am aware of what it feels like to be defined by one’s current life circumstances; therefore, I strive to ensure that my clients never feel that way. I value authenticity, transparency, humour, and honesty in my sessions, and I cultivate a safe and comforting environment that fosters open and non-judgemental communication. While upholding these values, I will also hold myself accountable to the same standards as my clients because we are equal in our time together. ”
