For over 14 years as a pediatric nurse, I have had the profound privilege of walking alongside children and their families during some of life’s toughest moments. I have seen firsthand the incredible strength and resilience that emerge in the face of adversity, and it’s been humbling to be a part of that journey. As a mental health nurse on an adolescent inpatient eating disorder and crisis program, I’m dedicated to helping teens who are navigating intense challenges. Whether they’re struggling with the physical toll of an eating disorder or trying to find stability after a suicide attempt or emotional crisis, I’m here to support them in regaining their footing.
My own turbulent adolescence and ongoing journey of overcoming perfectionism have greatly influenced who I am today. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the power of self-compassion and self-acceptance—principles I bring into my work with clients. As a mother of two young children, I also appreciate the joys and challenges of raising a family in today’s world. My personal and professional experiences have shown me that connection and support are everything during tough times. You don’t have to face life’s challenges alone—I'm here to walk alongside you, offering warmth, empathy, and encouragement every step of the way.
Q & A with Lola
What made you decide to choose your current profession?
I have always been drawn to helping others, which naturally led me to a career in nursing. While pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, I was so fascinated by my first psychology electives that I wanted to change my major. My parents were not thrilled, having already invested in two years of nursing tuition, so I pursued a minor in Psychology, knowing I would return to it eventually. Years into my career at SickKids, I found myself increasingly focused on supporting not just the medical needs of my young patients but also the psychological and emotional well-being of their families. This realization prompted me to come back to psychology, where I could channel my efforts into providing support that goes beyond physical care, focusing on supporting emotional and psychological needs more deeply.
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?
While there has been progress in mental health awareness, there is still a long way to go. One common misconception, which I’ve personally experienced, is the belief that mental health is simply a matter of willpower or "positive thinking"—that if someone just tries hard enough, they can "snap out of it." This mindset oversimplifies mental health, invalidating the complexity of an individual’s experience, which is influenced by a range of biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors. That’s why I take a more holistic approach to mental health challenges. By focusing on the whole person—their physical health, lifestyle, relationships, and environment—rather than just their symptoms, we can create more compassionate and comprehensive strategies for healing and growth.
What do you want your clients to know about you and what it will be like working with you?
I want you to know that I am a warm-hearted empath who is genuinely here to listen and understand your unique experience. Working with me means embarking on a journey of self-discovery where judgment is absent, and acceptance is central. We’re all on this journey of life together, and my goal is to support you with compassion and empathy as you explore and navigate your personal struggles as well as personal growth.
