Q & A with Nilgun (Nina)

What made you decide to choose your role as a therapist?

Choosing to become a therapist was a deeply personal and meaningful decision for me. Growing up, I had a natural inclination towards helping others and a genuine interest in understanding human behavior and emotions. As I navigated through life's challenges and experiences, I realized the profound impact that supportive relationships and compassionate listening can have on one's well-being!

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?

Many people believe that asking for help for mental health concerns is a sign of failure or inadequacy. This misconception can prevent individuals from seeking the support they need, leading to worsening symptoms and prolonged suffering. In truth, seeking help is a courageous and proactive step towards healing and well-being.

What do you want clients to know about you and what will it be like working with you?

I am deeply committed to their well-being and growth. Working with me, they can expect a warm, nonjudgmental, and collaborative environment where their unique experiences and perspectives are valued and respected. I strive to create a safe space where clients feel empowered to explore their challenges, express their emotions, and work towards positive change at their own pace.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

One of my most significant achievements is arriving in Canada without knowing English, and navigating a new culture independently. Motivated by my deep passion to become a therapist and support individuals on their journey, this experience has been invaluable in shaping my path and learning from those I aim to help.

What is your favourite place to find inspiration?

Water is where I find my best ideas. Whether it's listening to the waves at the beach, sitting by a calm lake, or feeling the power of a waterfall, water helps me relax and think clearly. It's like a symbol of starting fresh and feeling renewed, reminding me that life goes in cycles.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

My parents who are my biggest supporters always remind me to trust in my abilities and strengths, and to pursue what I love. Embracing this mindset has empowered me to overcome obstacles, take on new challenges, and follow my passions with conviction. It's a reminder that I have the power to create my own path and find fulfillment in doing what brings me joy and purpose.
